Where I'll be presenting & teaching
I love talking about the Mac, the web or great software, helping people use it well, and sharing tips or lessons learned. As I travel these current years, I am not fully up to date with the latest hardware or OSes, but I'm still tops at teaching Mac Efficiency. My additional focus is on traveling with technology, packing for travel, and independent travel.
To invite me to speak or do training, please use the contact info on my home page to invite me.

I'm not doing much speaking recently as I've been busy traveling and language barriers hamper me outside of the USA, but I'm still game! While in the states, I am working out which dates I can make to speak at local Los Angeles Mac User Groups. I'm also always happy to speak about travel.

Monday, January 29, 2017 — 7:30am - 9:30pm
Topic: Food and Travel Writing

- What do prospective publications and websites want and need to see?
- Adapting your voice to fit the style and needs of each publication
- Cultural issues — writing about different countries, and cuisine from different races and backgrounds than one's own
- Ethics — how much of travel and food writing is a "paid vacation," and how much is TOO much? Can one accept freebies, gifts, and so forth?

Topic: Websites for Writers 2017
The why, what, how and help! of having a great website
Does your website attract new readers?
Keep your fans happy?
Sell your books?
(Do you even have a website?)
With all this social media, does a writer really need their own website? And if you have one, what should you be doing with it nearly 20 years into the new millennium? So much has changed so fast; what should you be doing today?
Do you have any of these questions:- Do you really need a website?
- Why or why not?
- What alternatives are there to having your own website?
- Should you build it yourself or have someone else, like a publisher, create or manage it for you?
- Should your website be about you or about your book?
- What’s a Domain Name, what kind should you get and where should you get yours?
- How fast does your website need to be? Can you get a website for free, or do you need to pay for it?
- Do you have to use WordPress?
- To blog or not to blog What pages must your website have and what should you be doing on them? How do you get people to find out about and come to your website?
- What about search engines (Google, Duck Duck Go, Bing, etc.), Amazon, and book marketing services?
- How can a writer make money with their website, besides selling their own books?
- How does social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) fit in with your website?
- Where should you go when you need website help?
- What tools, websites, and Internet resources are writers using in 2017?
- What mistakes do writers make with their websites?
- How do you know when your website is “good enough?”
- IWOSC has gathered an expert panel of successful writers who know what you need to be doing with your website and on the Internet this year.

IWOSC, Independent Writers of Southern California monthly seminar
February 20, 2016 — 10:30am - 1:00pm
Topic: Word Processing Prowess
This seminar is created for writers, regardless of computer platform. It's about getting the words out and organized, helping you to tell your story, whatever that may be. The description:
Have you ever felt that Word Processing is actually harder than writing by hand or type writing? Do you use Word or another word processor and love it — except when you end up with weird page breaks or make one tiny change and end up with rivers of white instead of columns? Are you frustrated when you edit a word and actually lose the word. Do you “get by” in Word or your writing app, but know you could be more efficient?
If you have answered yes to any of these questions or possibly have other frustrations or questions, please do yourself the favor of coming to this seminar and learning how word processing can make you a superhero-strength writer.
But there’s more to the power of word processing than knowing the mechanics. The word processing app you use on your computer is not just typewriter on a computer. It can actually help you formulate and organize your ideas.
No matter how well you get by in your computer’s writing program, chances are great that you’ll leave this seminar with more word processing power and time-saving efficiency.

Special Screenings of MacHEADS The Movie
I was so excited to learn this documentary was being created that I happily jumped in to help when asked. Asked how to best bring it to the US, I suggested a world premiere at Macworld Expo and Paul Kent made it happen for us. I saw that premiere along with several hundred Mac users and felt such a mix of emotions watching it. Since then, I've been working to bring the MacHEADS to other venues across the US. Whenever I can actually host the screening it'll be listed on this page. So you'll see the words, MacHEADS The Movie a few times here.

In April, as I tried to play MacHEADS The Movie on MacValley's iMac and with their Apple mouse, you'd have thought I'd never touched a computer before. So I've been invited back to talk about, and show, some of the ways you can customize your Mac to make it work best for yourself.

About MacHEADS The Movie
I watched this emotional documentary for the first time along with several hundred fellow Mac users at Macworld Expo in January, and seeing the reaction offered to arrange a screening at MacValley.
We'll all view the film, pausing if requested to discuss what's on people's minds, then continue with some bonus material.
I wasn't part of the film's creation but Kobi and Ron have shared some of their insights with me in the past 9 months. I also met some of the original Apple/Mac users after the permiere.

Macworld Expo Special Feature MacHEADS The Movie
Wednesday, January 7, 2009 -- 6:15pm
When the producers of MacHEADS The Movie told me they were ready to premiere their documentary and asked me whether it might work as part of the Mac MIngle, I immediately knew it belonged at Macworld Expo as a Feature event. With their permission, I brought the idea to the expo's main man, and on that same Sunday afternoon received an enthusiastic response. They worked out the details and a few weeks later I had the honor of introducing Kobi and Ron Shely on the Macworld stage.
Sitting down to see the film, I shared laughter, pride and a gamut of emotions with a huge room full of fellow Mac users from all over the world as Kobi and Ron presented many a view of what makes the Mac and Apple's other stuff more than just equipment.
I was proud to be selected to play a small role in this fabulous film and endeavor. (Oh, I had a bit part in the film too; a few words about our amazing Mac community.)

When I first touched the MacBook Air at Macworld Expo I loved it and wanted to be able to use one. Then I thought about it and saw too many negatives. So when Jeff asked me to come on the air and talk about it, I gave it a serious look, really trying it as a user. Having used it now, created graphics in Photoshop, worked on websites in GoLive, and edited in Illustrator, moving between these apps and Mail and Safari, I'm a fan! Beautiful screen. As much room to work as my previous 15" Macs.

Topic: Life on the Mac Screen
A look at the most efficient ways to see just what you want and need, exactly when you want it.
It's easy to run a whole bunch of apps at the same time on your Mac. That keeps them handy — but it can also cause clutter that prevents you from seeing or accessing the page or file you need when you need it. Luckily (but not surprisingly) there's a lot of ways to hide or shoo unwanted documents for any time-being. We'll look at your various options so you can use whichever method works best for you in any situation

April 2007
South Bay Mac Group monthly meeting
Wednesday, April 25, 2007 -- 7:30pm - 9pm
Topic: Mac Efficiency
Back when MacCentral.com was the coolest site to visit daily, Deb Shadovitz penned an incredibly column called Mac Efficiency 101. Presented live at Macworld Expo for several years, it was another hit. Deb has *finally* brought Mac Efficiency back to the web — and she's bringing some of it to us live as well!
One of Deb's favorite things is Contextual Menus. She'll be sharing their power with us, showing us where they fit in apps we've been using. Then she'll focus on the contextual menu features we can have via Fruit Menu or FinderPop.
Meanwhile, you can visit MacEfficiency.com and take advantage of the years of wisdom reflected there.
No charge. Open to all.
Location: Knob Hill Community Center, Redondo Beach, CA on PCH & Knob Hill Road.

South Bay Mac Group monthly meeting
Wednesday, March 28, 2007 -- 7:30pm - 9pm
Topic: What you need to know if you're thinking of having a business website
(or maybe even one just for yourself).
Deb's been building websites and writing about building them for as long as the web's been public. Far too many times, people have asked her why their site is not helping them and not achieving what they need — even when they've paid a "designer" a lot of money.
She doesn't want to see that happen to us, so she's coming to give us the understanding we need in case we're heading toward sites of our own. She'll cover basic planning, an understanding of how to get found via search engines, and whatever else comes up.
If any of your friends are thinking of building a website, and especially if they'll planning to hire someone, be sure to give them this excellent opportunity to learn a lot of stuff that's sure to save them time and money.
No charge. Open to all.
Location: Knob Hill Community Center, Redondo Beach, CA on PCH & Knob Hill Road.
